My reflection

Name:   Nick                             Date:1.12.11
Look back

What did you do?
What could you improve?
Last term I made a documentary on the ILT and what they provide. This term I made a scale model of the band rotunda out of paper. I think that I could improve on my time management at the start of the year. I could also improve on working as a group because sometimes I took over.
Questions
pastedGraphic_1.pdf
What questions have you answered?
What questions do you still have?
At Enrich I learnt how to build and use a mindstorm. I would like to learn how to use I can animate.
Pull it apart
pastedGraphic_2.pdf
What factors contributed to your learning?
What challenged you?
Resources and people that think alike contribute to my learning. What challenged me was the higher standard of work you have to put out.
Make connections
pastedGraphic_3.pdf
What did you learn to do better?
What sort of thinking helped you?
I learnt to use computers better than when I started and creative thinking and flexible thinking helped me.
Make judgements

My progress was...
My progress was learning how to use certain equipment and Enrich boosted the subjects that I am good at.

Maths

At the moment I am building a scale model of the queens park band rotunda. I am making it out of paper and it is 65 times smaller than the actual band rotunda so the scale is 0.015:1. It is really difficult to scale down the model 65 times smaller then they are because it's not an even number like 10,20,30 etc.                                                 (Not my model)

Habits of mind

Today at Enrich I did a workshop called habits of mind with Alana and I did a puppet show with Caleb on managing impulsivity. When we did the play we had to state if managing impulsivity was a person where he would live, what he would eat, what actions would they do and what words it uses.I used six small animal finger  puppets and Caleb used one big hand puppet that was a wolf. If we presented it again I would like to speak louder and more clearly.

Scaling down the band rotunda

Today at Enrich I started to build a 20:1 model of the Queens Park band rotunda using popsicle sticks and pipe cleaners. I only got up to building the steps of the band rotunda and it is more complicated than I thought building a scale model of something because you have to measure it then you have to divide it by a certain number. The tallest step was 29 popsicle sticks high (when they were stacked flat)! I think the hardest part of the band rotunda was making the circle that the popsicle sticks were on by using pii.

Debating

Today at Enrich I did a workshop called debating. I was on the team called affirmative and we were debating about how having one car is better than two or three. One of our reasons was pollution and one of our other reasons is the cost of running it and repair time. My team won 11-6 and I scored one of our teams points. You got a point for a good rebut or a good statement.
Please tell me your opinion about whether having one car is better than two cars in a family.

Can-struction

Today I walked down to the museum and looked at the can-struction that Enrich spent the last term building.  There was three designs, a kiwi, a rugby ball and a hamburger. My favourite can-struction was the rugby ball made out of black and white food cans because it represented the rugby world cup. The kiwi took the longest time to build because it was the most complicated and the rugby ball took the least amount of time to build because it was the least complicated.

Inside Stadium Southland!

Today I went to stadium southland to film inside the velodrome. When we got inside I did a few laps of the track and it is amazing! The whole track is so level and smooth! It looks like you are going to hit a bump and crash, but you can't because the track is designed so well! If you get the chance you should definitely do a few laps round the stadium.

The ILT

Today at Enrich I learnt that the ILT has given over $1,098,100 to five different causes over the last two years. They have given netball southland $470,150, rugby southland $248,050, ILT education conference $150,000, basketball southland $130,000 and southland football $100,000. Thats lots of money, (but it was worth it winning the shield twice in the last three years!)

Stadium Southland

Today at Enrich I learnt what the new stadium would look like without the ILT. Without the ILT it would look like this:

With the ILT it will probably will look like this:
That is partly why the ILT is important. It is also important because it donates funds to different causes and it can help stop people gamble.

Ann Eustace

Today at Enrich Wilson, Jordan and I went to the ILT to talk with Ann Eustace about the ILT for my documentary. I learnt that the ILT provides gambling machines for different venues. The ILT not only provides gambling machines but they also can help you stop gambling and is very successful at doing that. I only just realised how much the ILT contribute to Invercargill.
ILT!

The Mobius Strip And The Klein Bottle

Today at Enrich, Darryn showed us how to make a Mobius strip and told us about the Klein bottle. The Mobius strip looks like this:

and the Klein bottle looks like this:
My favorite is the Klein bottle but the Mobius strip is easier to make.
I can make a Mobius strip but not a Klein bottle. The Klein bottle is made by two Mobius strips put together. The Klein bottle has no inside or outside neither does the Mobius strip . The mobius strip is used for multiple purposes including an engine belt and a tape because it last double the length of a normal engine belt and a normal tape.

Documentaries!

Today at Enrich Steve and Gussy came in. Gussy taught us how to speak in front of a camera and how to stand in front of a camera. Steve told us some tips about filming like where to film and how to film. I liked it because we learnt some helpful information and Steve and Gussy showed us fun ways to do it. Thank you Gussy and Steve!

Talent development!

Today all of Thursdays group chose a new talent development topic for the rest of the term! I chose to make a documentary and enter it in the

!

I'm not sure what my documentary is going to be about, but I'm thinking of an idea. The made awards sound like lots of fun and if you win, you get cool prizes! Comment if you have any ideas that I could use for my documentary!

Teacher Comment

Nicholas.
Well done on a successful term at Enrich.  It was great to see the enjoyment you got from completing your ICT Talent Development.  Your blog posts were regular and detailed throughout the term.  You manage your time wisely at Enrich and prioritise what needs to be done each week.  You have a pleasant, easy going nature, which shows through when working with other students.  Keep up the hard work for next term.
Katie.

Two stars and a wish

Today we were asked to make a post about two stars and a wish. Two stars is two things that you did well or you are most proud of and the wish is something you would do differently next term or, a goal you have in mind for next term. One of my two stars is that I really enjoyed ICT talent development because I learnt how to use Alice and Scratch and I also got to programme and build a Lego Mindstorm. My other star is the chess leader-board because everyone wants to get to the top and they won't stop at anything to get there! My wish is to programme the Lego Minstorms to do a bigger range of stuff, not just moving forward and then stopping.

Scratch Tutorials

Today for ICT talent development we were making our own programming tutorials. The one that I am making is about how you make sprites on Scratch. Sprites are characters that you can either create yourself or download off Scratch. Sprites are really easy to make and you can make sprites that are cats, dogs or even dinosaurs! The tutorials are easy to make because all you need to do is open Active Inspire and click on the tool that is a video camera and choose either full screen recorder or area recorder. For area recorder you choose the area that you want to film, press launch recorder then it will come up with something that looks like this:
Then you press the red button and it will come up with this:
Then you press save and it will start filming!

Lego Mindstorms in action!

At Enrich today for ICT talent development, we were programming the Lego mindstorms that we built last week. I was programming a Lego mindstorms with Jonathan and we programmed it to move forward for 10 seconds, then pause and move forward for another 10 seconds. Mindstorms are easy to programme, but you have to watch the tutorials first or you won't know what to do. I think that Mindstorms are the most exiting thing we've done for ICT talent development because it's not just in a computer screen, you can   use the robot in the real world!

Lego mindstorms

Today at Enrich, for ICT talent development we were making lego mindstorms. We were doing the simplest of mindstorm robots and I found it easier than I expected, but it still wasn't that easy. Building the robots was my favorite thing that we have done during ICT talent development because I like building complicated lego. I can't wait until we programme the robots because it would be cool to watch the robots move and interact with other objects.

Gifted awareness week

This week is gifted awareness week! I think that it is called this because the people that made the week want to raise awareness for the gifted. I am gifted in some areas (like maths) but in others I am average (like writing). Joseph Renzulli's model of giftedness says that to be gifted you have to be creative, have above average ability and task commitment. I agree with Joseph that you need to have task commitment, above average ability and creativity to be gifted.

Talent development

At Enrich this term, I am doing ICT Talent Development with with Alana about programming computers.  At the moment we are learning how to use Alice.  I have learned how you create a new command.  I also learned that you can do some pretty cool stuff from making penguins sing to driving a car through a maze.  Alice can be challenging or simple depending on what type of world that you want to make and the objects you put in.  You can download Alice on http://www.alice.org/ and then you click on the link that says Alice 2.2.

                                                                      Enjoy!

Multiple intelligences

Today at Enrich I did a survey about the multiple intelligences. A man called Profesor Howard Gardner said "I believe that there are eight intelligences,  kinaesthetic- body smart linguistic, word smart, logical - number smart, interpersonal - people smart, intrapersonal - myself smart, musical - music smart visual/spatial - picture smart and naturalistic - nature smart and that's how this multiple intelligences survey started. The picture above is my results from the multiple intelligences survey. If you want to take the survey, you go to www.bgfl.org and there is a search bar at the top of the page. In the search bar at the top you type in multiple intelligences survey and it is the option at the top. Good luck!!!

P4C

Today at Enrich I did P4C, P4C stands for philosophy for children. The question was 'can you lie to yourself?' The more you think about it the more confusing it gets. I think that you can lie to yourself because it can be sort of like an encouragement. Could you please comment and give your opinion about this question? Thanks to all the people who comment!

Game

Today at Enrich I was my turn to lead the game and we played sardines. Sardines is sort of like hide and go seek. Sardines is where there is one person that hides and the rest of the people that are playing shut there eyes and wait for the person thats hiding to hide. When the person has hidden, everyone tries to find Him/Her. When they find them, they hide with them and the last person to find them is in for the next round. The game goes on like this until they get bored or until they have to do something else.

Photography

I did a photography workshop and I learnt how to take close up photos of objects. These are really close up shots which are called 'macro'. You need to set the camera to macro by pressing the tulip button. All  three of these photos I took in the garden outside Enrich.
After we took the photos we imported them and did a little bit of editing before we emailed them.
We also did long shots but I prefer macro because you can see the closeup details of objects.

Chess

Today at Enrich I looked up www.chesskids.com and learnt that pawns are worth 1, Knights are 3, Rooks are 5,  Queens are 9 and Kings are worth the game. I also learnt that there are 64 squares on a chess board.  I also learnt a new strategy called scholars which involves a series of four moves to achieve checkmate. I am going to go and practice the new moves I learned with someone.
